Surfing in Tenerife: all you need to know?
Tenerife is considered one of the best surfing spots in Europe. Located in the Canary Islands, just off the coast of Africa. Tenerife offer good weather all year, warm climate and waves for all levels.
Whether you are a surfing beginner or an advanced surfer, Tenerife has a wave for everyone !
It’s a popular destination for anyone looking for some European winter sun, as well as a dream destination for lovers of the outdoors. There are many great things to do in Tenerife and many revolve around the great outdoors and water sports such as surfing, kayaking, sup, snorkel …
The best time of the year
If you are already an intermediate or advanced surfer, you will probably prefer the winter surfing season in Tenerife. The waves in winter are generally stronger, bigger and more consistent.
From October to February you will usually find really good and big waves all over the island, perfect for advanced surfers looking for fun. That’s why Tenerife is one of my favorite places to visit in Europe in winter.
In the summer the waves are generally much smaller which makes them perfect for beginners surfers although sometimes nice waves come in from the south
What to pack for a surf trip in Tenerife
In addition to the usual travel essentials, there are a few things you should add to your suitcase to make sure you make the most of your surf experience in Tenerife.
Water Shoes – The surf spots in Las Americas are all reefs and that’s why we recommend that you use water shoes if you don’t want to injure your feet every time you surf.
Wetsuite – In the summer you dont need to use wetsuite, in the winter with a 3.2 you can surf all the time that you want
Poncho – Taking off your wetsuit and putting on dry clothes is perhaps the most annoying and satisfying part of surfing. If you want to do it comfortably you should get one of these ponchos.
Sun Cream SPF 50 zinco – You will need one of these as you will spend many consecutive hours at sea and regular sunscreen is not strong enough to protect you adequately from the canarian sun.
